Description
This is a wonderful single bookend depicting an iconic symbol of this storied University, the Rotunda. The Rotunda is a building located on the Lawn on the original grounds of the University of Virginia. Thomas Jefferson designed it to represent the "authority of nature and power of reason" and modeled it after the Pantheon in Rome.
The Rotunda is the centerpiece of the Academical Village, it was designed to house the library.
This appears to be a very rare rendering of this campus centerpiece.
It does not look like a production piece, and the only mark it has is the letter H faintly embossed on the back.
I am aware of two versions of the colonnade that were made as bookends, but this solid bronze bookend has all the markings of a one off?
I am convinced this is an important find that is well made with quality material.
It measures 4.5” wide X 1.75” deep X 5.5” tall, and weighs about the same as a small child.
My items are “as found”.
Please look carefully at the pictures and request additional pictures or specific information if needed.
It could stand a professional buffing, but it is in top vintage condition.
Please use the pictures as the best description of condition.
